Teams were set three tasks- performing a synchronised routine, a bordercross style relay race, and a multi skill challenge.
The organisation was overseen by longtime Curriculum Ex Street Surfing ace coach Alex Boardman with the help of pupils completing their Sports Leader Awards.

Contestants were involved in the judging process for the routines, with riders favouring the edgier skateboard based moves of Bodmin over the careful synchronicity of Launceston.

Bodmin also proved most tactically decisive in the multi skill challenge and it was these two performances that saw their combined score of 48 points topping the leaderboard.

Bodmin stepped forward for their medals as part of the closing ceremony cheered on by hundreds of pupils from across the county.

Street Surfing session at Marriotts Sports College

The schools involved are Mon 10th May- Bridgewater, Tues 11th May- The John Warner School, Wed 12th May- Tring School, Thurs 13th May- Sir John Laws Sports College, 14th May Marriotts Sports College. 

As always the events promise to generate lots of local publicity for the schools and the sport. A full story to follow.

George Salter Collegiate Academy was the setting for the BBC’s piece on the activity, and ITV covered events at Alexandra High School.

The enthusiam of the media to learn more and generate awareness for the activity really is fantastic news, and reminds us that what we offer really is unique- we were featured in the sports sections too, not the “and finally….” section!

(nb: “mindsurf”, verb- to mentally recreate the action of surfing without need of a wave….erm!)

The next half term sees the Street Surfing team spend an intensive two weeks between 9th and 20th of November teaching Street Surfing to the pupils of ten secondary schools.

The lucky schools to benefit from the free delivery are:-
Alexandra High School, Wodensborough CT College, Shireland Collegiate Academy, Sandwell Academy, Oldbury College of Sport, Bristnall Hall Technology College, St Michael’s C of E High School, Stuart Bathurst, George Salter Collgiate Academy and Holly Lodge High School.

If you are a student at one of these schools, it would be wise not to forget your PE kit during those weeks…..

…Sound good?…too good, there is a major catch. The boards, often called Vigorboards or Exboards, are unlicensed for sale in the UK!! In the same way as a pirate dvd, or football shirt finding it’s way to UK shores so do imitation wave boards unlicensed for sale in the UK.

There are major implications that worry us. Best practise means we take every step to minimise the chance of harm from inferior build quality and design of copy boards. Also we seek to support proper UK business channels. In a search to find the affordable option we do not compromise on these building blocks, as such Curriculum Ex only works and supplies kitemark licensed equipment.

The hard work we have done to build faith in a new activity could be tarnished by accidents caused by non kitemark equipment, and this would be soul destroying.

We will instruct poise and how to generate speed on a wave, as well as inspiring pupils about the lifestyle with our development officers.

With over 300,000 people regularly surfing as part of a healthy lifestyle and surf clubs throughout the UK, it is our pledge at Curriculum Ex to raise awareness for this sport and the very real possibilities for people of all ages and walks of life to get involved with the sport.

The Waveboard represents a link to all board sports, so we are keen to also raise awareness for Snow Boarding, Skateboarding, Windsurfing, Kite Surfing and Wakeboarding through our activity.

Pupils at St Peter’s High School, Broadlands School, Somervale School, Castletown School, George Ward School, The Clarendon College, Larkrise Special School, St Lawrence School, Lavington School, Bristol Brunel Academy, The City Academy, Redland Green School, Ashton Park School, Brislington Enterprise College, Greendown Community School and Churchdown School will have great fun learning a new skill, lookout for the taster session at your school!!

Gary Holding, Director of Curriculum Ex, said on the awards day “to be at this stage in the project and to have met with the support from UnLtd has been, on a personal note, my proudest achievement to date. For the activity, this award will mean we are one step closer to a sustainable platform for the activity. Our primary objective with the award is to find, train and equip the best possible people to act as our Development Officers, as this is the first and, in a way, last step in sustainability”
